Kelly said Tuesday that Kaepernick will play in the team's final exhibition game Thursday night in San Diego after missing the first two preseason games with a tired shoulder. Moore was expected to be Tony Romo's backup, and now both are out after Romo broke a bone in his back in the preseason against Seattle. The Cowboys haven't said how long Romo will be out, but rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott figures to start at least the first few games if healthy.

Beachum and Joeckel spent much of training camp splitting repetitions at both positions. The Jaguars gave Beachum a five-year, $45 million contract in free agency and declined to pick up a fifth-year option for 2017 in Joeckel's contract, so the outcome is what many expected.

''I saw the outfielders kind of meeting right at that little Bermuda Triangle out there, so I got a little scared,'' Saltalamacchia said. Saltalamacchia's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.

''We have been in regular communication with administrators from the Tampa Sports Authority, Hillsborough County, the City of Tampa and the National Weather Service over the past day as it has become apparent that the most severe weather associated with Tropical Depression Nine will likely make landfall on Thursday,'' Buccaneers chief operating officer Brian Ford said.

After three preseason games, the Jacksonville Jaguars still have questions - more like concerns - about the left side of their offensive line. Free-agent acquisition Kelvin Beachum was rusty in his first game in nearly a year Sunday night against Cincinnati. It's far from an ideal situation, especially since the Jaguars have little time before the regular-season opener against Green Bay on Sept. 11.

Take a look at the American League's second wild card, for example: Right now, Baltimore leads that race and Detroit is only two games back, but according to the playoff probabilities at Fangraphs.com , the Orioles have only a 43 percent chance to reach the postseason, and the Tigers are at 36 percent. The New York Mets are only 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second wild card in the National League - hardly a daunting deficit with over a month to play. Fangraphs gives the Mets a 19-percent chance to make it.

Rays-Red Sox preview (Yahoo Sports)

Stunned by an eight-run rally Sunday night that cost them the series finale against the Kansas City Royals, the Boston Red Sox look to Rick Porcello to reverse their fortunes. Porcello brings a 12-0 home record to the mound in the opener of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night at Fenway Park. Porcello will face fellow right-hander Matt Andriese in a rematch of a game last Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Neither pitcher earned a decision in that game, won 4-3 by the Rays in 11 innings, and Porcello takes his second shot at a major-league-leading 18th win in the rematch.

Yankees-Royals preview (Yahoo Sports)

On Aug. 6, the Kansas City Royals were seven games below .500, 11 games back of the Cleveland Indians in the American League Central and 9 1/2 games out in the wild-card chase. The defending World Series champion Royals, however, have been the hottest team in the majors since then, winning 17 of 21 games and seven consecutive series. Kansas City has crept within 5 1/2 games of the Indians and is three games back of the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild-card spot.

Marlins-Mets preview (Yahoo Sports)

As unusual as the New York Mets rotation appears to be this week, manager Terry Collins did not devise it by throwing a bunch of names into a hat. A pair of National League wild card contenders will meet Monday night, when the Mets host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a pivotal four-game series at Citi Field. The Marlins (67-63) and Mets (66-64) are chasing the St. Louis Cardinals, who currently occupy the second wild card spot.

Reds-Angels preview (Yahoo Sports)

The Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds don't know much about each other, playing head-to-head only nine times in their respective histories. The Angels, though 18 games under .500 and 20 1/2 games out in the American League West, enter the series playing well, having won four of their past five games, beating playoff contenders Toronto and Detroit during that stretch. The Reds, though, have Dan Straily starting on the mound coming in on a hot streak.

Nationals-Phillies preview (Yahoo Sports)

A.J. Ellis, the Philadelphia Phillies' recently acquired catcher, has made an immediate impact with his new team. The same cannot be said of Jake Thompson, the Phillies' rookie right-hander. Thompson (1-3, 9.78) will be looking to get untracked Monday, when the Phillies open a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.

Dodgers-Rockies preview (Yahoo Sports)

Kenta Maeda will try to continue his dominance against Colorado and his mastery at Coors Field when he starts Monday against the Rockies for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Maeda is 13-7 with a 3.37 ERA this season. In his last outing Tuesday, Maeda picked up the win in a 9-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Athletics-Astros preview (Yahoo Sports)

After six games serving as the designated hitter or as a pinch hitter off the bench, Yuli Gurriel is poised to make his debut defensively for the Astros this week against the Athletics, perhaps as early as Monday night in the series opener. Gurriel worked extensively with third base coach Gary Pettis in left fielder prior to the series finale against the Rays on Sunday in anticipation of donning a glove for the first time since the Astros (68-62) recalled him from Triple-A Fresno on Aug. 21. Gurriel will debut at either third base or in left, with the latter a more likely option given how effectively rookie Alex Bregman has wielded his glove at the hot corner.

Weekend Sports in Brief (Yahoo Sports)

Colin Kaepernick plans to sit through the national anthem for as long as he feels is appropriate and until he sees major change in America, specifically when it comes to race relations. Two days after he refused to stand for the ''The Star Spangled Banner'' before the 49ers' preseason loss to the Packers, Kaepernick said his stand will continue. Kaepernick insists his stand is not against men and women in the military fighting for Americans' rights and freedoms.
