Big hit: Browns release veteran safety Donte Whitner (Yahoo Sports)

In this Dec. 6, 2015 photo, Cleveland Browns strong safety Donte Whitner walks off the field after an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Cleveland. Whitner hears it from every direction, the scrutiny, the constant questions about Cleveland's losing. His own frustrated kids give him regular flak about it. The veteran safety didn't exactly bargain for this when he joined his hometown Cleveland Browns before last season, ready to carry the winning tradition he helped establish with the San Francisco 49ers to his new franchise. A punishing hitter, safety Donte Whitner got flattened by the Browns. Cleveland released the 30-year-old Whitner on Saturday, the latest starter discarded by the team's new front office, which has spent the past month purging the roster. Whitner's release follows that of linebacker Karlos Dansby, the team's leading tackler last season, and the departures of Pro Bowl center Alex Mack, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, former Pro Bowl safety Tashaun Gipson and wide receiver/return specialist Travis Benjamin, all of whom signed with other teams during free agency.
