McCoy, Watkins say Bills lacked discipline under Rex Ryan (Yahoo Sports)

Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy and star receiver Sammy Watkins believe the next Bills' coach should hold players more accountable than Rex Ryan did the past two seasons in Buffalo. ''Discipline has been an issue,'' McCoy said Friday in his first public comments since the Bills fired Ryan on Tuesday. ''The talent is definitely here,'' McCoy said.

Packers, Lions prepare for high-stakes game (Yahoo Sports)

Aaron Rodgers' last throw at Ford Field was one for the ages. If the Lions can't stop Rodgers and the Packers from completing a magical late-season run on Sunday night, they might not have a prayer of making the playoffs. By the same token, if Rodgers cools off, Green Bay could see its season come to an abrupt end.

Broncos try to deny Raiders AFC West title (Yahoo Sports)

The Oakland Raiders are coming to terms with the loss of quarterback Derek Carr even as they gear up for their playoff run without him. Seldom-used backup Matt McGloin, making his first start since 2013, is set to take the field Sunday against the Denver Broncos (8-7) in place of Carr, who is out indefinitely after breaking his right leg in last week's victory over Indianapolis. "I think we all kind of went through that period of reflection on Derek and him going down," Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said.

Redskins have all the incentive in game against Giants (Yahoo Sports)

The playoff picture is clear for the Washington Redskins. Beat the New York Giants on Sunday at FedEx Field and they're in -- as long as the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions don't tie on Sunday night. A regular season that began with two losses and was nearly sidetracked by a bad home loss two weeks ago can end with a postseason berth as the NFC's sixth seed if Washington (8-6-1) defeats the playoff-bound Giants (10-5), who have nothing to play for on Sunday.

Jaguars, Colts try to end disappointing seasons on positive note (Yahoo Sports)

With one game remaining during the regular season, the Indianapolis Colts are in the unfamiliar position of having no chance to make the playoffs. The Jacksonville Jaguars have been in that spot many times in recent years, and so this season is no different. In a game both teams likely thought could hold playoff stakes at one point, the Colts and Jaguars will instead try to salvage individual goals and end the season with a strong showing during an otherwise inconsequential matchup on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Two members of the Kansas City Chiefs were docked a total of $30,385 for their actions in their victory over the Denver Broncos last week. Defensive tackle Chris Jones was fined for his forearm shiver to quarterback Trevor Siemian well after the ball was thrown. After the Chiefs' 33-10 win that eliminated the defending champs from the playoff chase, the affable Jones said in the locker room: ''My mom be on Twitter and someone said, 'Dumb-dumb Chris Jones got his first fine.' I thought that was kind of funny.

Clash of Titans, Texans loses its meaning (Yahoo Sports)

The Tennessee Titans' hopes of a surprise AFC South championship were already in serious trouble before quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a fractured fibula in the third quarter of last week's 38-17 loss at Jacksonville. After becoming one of the NFL's best stories in the previous two weeks with gritty wins over Denver and Kansas City to give it a real chance at winning the division, Tennessee erased those performances with a brutal 60 minutes against a 3-12 team. Coach Mike Mularkey believes that will be enough of a motivator to summon up a winning effort.

Vikings, Bears close out respective seasons (Yahoo Sports)

When the Minnesota Vikings traveled to Chicago in Week 8, they still held high hopes of a season that had started with a 5-0 record. Minnesota lost at Philadelphia coming out of its bye before the Bears surprised many with a 20-10 victory over the Vikings that week. The downward spiral continued until Minnesota was ousted from the playoff picture with a 35-28 loss to Green Bay last week, the eighth loss in 10 games.

Lynn auditions for Bills' head coaching job against Jets (Yahoo Sports)

At Anthony Lynn's first news conference as interim head coach of the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday, he fielded nearly four dozen questions. Not one was about the New York Jets, the Bills' opponent in Sunday's season finale at MetLife Stadium. Sunday's game could also function as a tryout for Lynn, who has interviewed for head coaching jobs in the past and is expected to be a candidate for openings around the NFL this season, including the one in Buffalo.

Ravens full-go for finale; Bengals to sit key players (Yahoo Sports)

The Ravens (8-7) plan to play their regular starters and salvage a winning season. The Bengals (5-9), however, are decimated with injuries and have shut down several top players, including tight end Tyler Eifert, guard Clint Boling and receiver A.J. Green, who was ruled out Wednesday by coach Marvin Lewis. Linebacker Vontaze Burfict is still in concussion protocol and he is listed as doubtful.

WR Michael Floyd working to learn Patriots' playbook (Yahoo Sports)

Tom Brady says Michael Floyd's fast-paced introduction to the New England offense is coming along well. Floyd, picked up by the Patriots after the Cardinals released him following his DUI arrest in Arizona, caught one pass late in last week's 41-3 blowout of the New York Jets. Brady said he could ''definitely'' feel Floyd's experience factor after he arrived.

Von Miller is headed for a very different kind of offseason. ''For one, I already know that I'm not going to be Super Bowl MVP,'' the Broncos star cracked. No, but he could still win his first Defensive Player of the Year award - if voters look past Denver's offensive-driven nosedive that will leave them out of the postseason party for the first time since 2010.

Think you knew sports in 2016? Take this quiz to make sure (Yahoo Sports)

The Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years and LeBron James brought an NBA title to long suffering Cleveland. You know that, but how much do you really know about the year in sports? Here's a quiz to find out (and there are no right answers here):

Vikings' Adrian Peterson listed out for Bears game (Yahoo Sports)

FILE - In this Sept. 18, 2016, file photo, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson carries the ball during the first half of an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers, in Minneapolis. Coach Mike Zimmer says he expects Peterson to practice all week. He is not sure if his star running back will be available to play the Indianapolis Colts this weekend. (AP Photo/Andy Clayton-King, File)

Adrian Peterson is listed as out for the season finale against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, leaving open the possibility the star running back has played his final game for the Minnesota Vikings. Peterson was listed on Friday has having groin and knee injuries. Peterson is under contract for more than $18 million next season and it is unlikely the Vikings will keep the 31-year-old player at that price.

A look at some of 2016's most inspiring sports moments (Yahoo Sports)

One example: When sideline reporter Craig Sager died from leukemia this month, there were heartfelt tributes tinged with sadness, of course, but also remembrances that spread the positive message he offered as he continued to cover the NBA and college basketball despite his illness. There's just too many things,'' Sager said in August. During a qualifying heat for the 5,000 meters at the Rio Games, Abbey D'Agostino of the U.S. and Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand got their feet tangled, sending both sprawling.

Cubs, Cavs douse droughts, cleanse curses with 2016 titles (Yahoo Sports)

As thousands swarmed around Chicago's dugout like ants climbing a hill more than an hour after their cherished Cubbies won the World Series for the first time since 1908 by capping a colossal comeback with an 8-7 win over the Indians, the skies opened over Progressive Field. From Chicago to Cleveland and across the Atlantic to England, where 5,000-to-1 longshot Leicester City stunned the soccer world by winning the Premier League for its first title in 132 years, cities and teams who had suffered for decades finally finished on top. ''2016, it was a magical ride,'' said Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, who guided his team to an NBA title - the first for one of the city's three major sports teams since the Browns, who were on the verge of a winless season until a few days ago, ruled the NFL in 1964.

Bills CB Gilmore to miss season finale due to concussion (Yahoo Sports)

Buffalo Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore has been ruled out for Sunday's season finale against the New York Jets due to a concussion. Gilmore was hurt during overtime of Buffalo's 34-31 loss to the Miami Dolphins last Saturday and did not practice all week. Left tackle Cordy Glenn will also miss his third straight game with a back injury.

Suspended Oakland Raiders pass rusher Aldon Smith will not be reinstated by the NFL this season. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday that the league has deferred a decision on Smith's petition for reinstatement and will begin consideration in March. Pro Football Talk first reported the decision by the league.

Jaguars WR Hurns unlikely to play in season finale at Colts (Yahoo Sports)

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Allen Hurns likely will miss a fifth consecutive game Sunday at Indianapolis. Hurns injured his hamstring Nov. 27 at Buffalo and hasn't played since. Running back Chris Ivory (hamstring), receiver Marqise Lee (hip flexor) and tight end Neal Sterling (concussion) also are questionable.

Michael Bennett and the Seattle Seahawks reached agreement on a three-year contract extension on Friday that will keep the defensive end under contract through the 2020 season. Bennett's agent Doug Hendrickson told The Associated Press that discussions about the extension started six months ago and finally reached their conclusion just before the end of the regular season. Bennett's deal begins with the 2018 season and is worth up to $31.5 million, including $16 million in the first year of the new deal.

Of course, Mathis would prefer to leave the game on his own terms, but he's been around long to know how fickle the football business can be.

The first year of coach Chip Kelly's tenure has not gone according to plan after San Francisco fired two coaches the previous two seasons. Kelly's team set a franchise record with 13 consecutive losses and will have one of the top picks of the NFL draft. General manager Trent Baalke has faced criticism.

Saints' Ingram wants 1,000 yards rushing to cap career year (Yahoo Sports)

One of the most important games of Mark Ingram's college football career took place in the same stadium where he'll have an opportunity on Sunday to hit a significant milestone as a pro. Ingram needs 60 yards rushing in Atlanta to hit 1,000 for the first time since the New Orleans Saints made a trade to select him late in the first round of the 2011 draft. ''It would mean a lot,'' Ingram said.

The second-year wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks is more than just a pass catcher. Lockett's become so versatile he even owns the Seahawks longest touchdown run of the season on a 75-yarder a few weeks ago against Carolina. ''Hopefully Paul (Richardson) can kind of fill that role, fill those shoes, because he is extremely explosive as well.

The New York Giants had just finished calisthenics and were about to break into group workouts when something out of the ordinary happened at practice Thursday. For a few seconds it seemed like rookie coach Ben McAdoo would be delivering a message, just three days before the playoff-bound Giants (10-5) are to face the Washington Redskins on the road in the regular-season finale. Seconds later when a few players shifted their locations, it was obvious that the guy who had their attention was linebacker and defensive captain Jonathan Casillas.

Miller, Broncos hope this isn't end of Ware's career (Yahoo Sports)

DeMarcus Ware was likened to a vintage Ferrari that simply needed new brakes. There's certainly nothing wrong with the motor of the 34-year-old Denver Broncos pass rush specialist, though. Ware is scheduled to have surgery Friday to repair a ruptured disk, ending what's been an injury-filled season.

Jones still not 100 percent for Falcons (Yahoo Sports)

Receiver Julio Jones doubts he'll be at full capacity when the playoff-bound Atlanta Falcons end the regular season against New Orleans. After missing the previous two games with a sore toe, Jones played just 39 of 63 snaps, catching four passes for 60 yards, in last week's win at Carolina. A victory over the Saints will give the Falcons the NFC's No. 2 playoff seed, a bye next week and a home game in the divisional round.

Reggie Bush has picked up many honors and accolades throughout his football career. The veteran Buffalo Bills running back has a chance of becoming the first non-quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger to finish a season with negative rushing yards (with a minimum of 10 carries). According to Pro Football Reference, Bush could become the first non-quarterback to finish the season with negative yardage on double-digit carries since John Adams in 1961.

With Matthews, Perry on mend, Packers get pass rush punch (Yahoo Sports)

Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are nowhere close to 100 percent healthy. It's obviously a premiere position on defense for anybody and these guys have been battling injuries all year,'' coach Mike McCarthy said. Getting to Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford on Sunday night will be important, especially after two straight porous games in pass coverage for the Packers (9-6).

With Carr out, Raiders expected to rely on potent run game (Yahoo Sports)

When the Oakland Raiders played the Denver Broncos the first time this season, they relied heavily on the run. The formula that delivered the 30-20 victory in November will probably be a similar formula that Oakland uses in the rematch in Denver this week, especially with backup Matt McGloin taking the snaps from center in place of injured starting quarterback Derek Carr. ''I think everyone is taking a little bit more on their shoulders because they understand Derek went down,'' running back DeAndre Washington said.

DeMarco Murray has a chance to lead the AFC in rushing with a strong performance Sunday in Tennessee's season finale. The veteran running back even has been mentioned as a possible candidate for NFL Comeback Player of the Year - two years after he was voted the league's offensive player of the year. Murray said he only wants one thing Sunday when he walks off the field: A win.

Mixing and matching safeties since late last season, the Washington Redskins have no choice but to use a safety-by-committee approach in their must-win regular season finale. With their playoff hopes riding on beating the New York Giants on Sunday - as long as the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions don't tie - the Redskins are likely to start one converted cornerback and a Week 1 healthy scratch at the safety positions. Season-ending injuries to David Bruton, DeAngelo Hall and veteran addition Donte Whitner mean Washington will lean heavily on Will Blackmon, Duke Ihenacho and even special teams ace Deshazor Everett against the Giants.

Rookie safety Davis aids Pittsburgh's defensive resurgence (Yahoo Sports)

A month into his rookie season, Sean Davis was lost. Asked to split time between free safety and nickelback, the Pittsburgh Steelers second-round pick could do neither particularly well. At one point, veteran safety Mike Mitchell turned toward Davis during a game and asked Davis what coverage the team was in.

Bad form for the AFC, which has all six of its playoff qualifiers determined heading into the final Sunday of the schedule. The sharpest spotlights will be in the nation's capital in the afternoon, then in the Motor City at night. If the Redskins beat the Giants, then the loser between the Packers and Lions won't get into the postseason.

Patriots defense stingiest in NFL heading to playoffs (Yahoo Sports)

The New England defense has turned from a major question mark to a strength as the Patriots steam toward the playoffs. ''It's just y'all that was gassing all of that up,'' defensive co-captain Dont'a Hightower said Thursday, pointing a finger at the media. The Patriots, who visit Miami on Sunday looking for their seventh straight win, a 14-2 regular-season record and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, haven't yielded a touchdown in more than nine quarters and haven't allowed a real touchdown drive in the past three games.

The Miami Dolphins gave up a season-worst 589 yards last week against the Buffalo Bills, allowed five first downs in overtime and still won. The Dolphins are on pace to set a franchise record for the most yards allowed in a season, but they're 10-5 and headed for the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Miami ranks third-worst in the NFL in yards allowed (382 per game), and next to last in rushing yards allowed per play (4.9, worst in franchise history).

Antonio Brown is in the driver's seat in his car bet with Brandon Marshall, so he's looking for the Jets receiver to turn over the keys. Robert Griffin III can finish what he started. Cleveland's quarterback was cleared from concussion protocol on Thursday and will likely start Sunday at Pittsburgh in the season finale. Griffin was checked by an independent neurologist - the last step in the NFL's procedure on head injuries - and will practice as the Browns (1-14) prepare to face a Steelers team that has locked up a playoff spot and will rest starters, including stars Ben Roethlisberger, Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown.

Regular-season finale means something to Patriots, Dolphins (Yahoo Sports)

Both teams are headed for the playoffs and both still have something to play for when the New England Patriots visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. For the Patriots, who have won six straight games to go to 13-2, a win means home-field advantage for the entire AFC playoffs. For the Dolphins, a win could move them from the No. 6 to the No. 5 seed, which would send them to Houston instead of Pittsburgh.

Browns ride high into finale with Steelers (Yahoo Sports)

Joe Thomas wept. The Cleveland Browns were winners again, even if only for one week. Yes, the Browns avoided the ignominy of becoming the third team to go winless in a season (Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) when they defeated the San Diego Chargers 20-17 last week.

Cowboys visit Eagles in final postseason tuneup (Yahoo Sports)

The Dallas Cowboys are NFC East champions and clinched homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. The Philadelphia Eagles will miss the postseason for the third consecutive season and are trying to avoid their second double-digit loss campaign in the past 12 seasons. In other words, there is nothing at stake and the game is virtually meaningless for both squads when the Cowboys (13-2) visit the Eagles (6-9) on Sunday (FOX, 1 p.m. ET).

Former Oregon star Byron Marshall has his chance with Eagles (Yahoo Sports)

Byron Marshall spent most of the season practicing with the Philadelphia Eagles during the week, watching their games on the weekend and waiting for his chance to play. The former Oregon star is one of two running backs left standing for the Eagles (6-9) heading into the season finale against Dallas (13-2). Ryan Mathews, Wendell Smallwood and Kenjon Barner are on injured reserve, so Marshall and veteran Darren Sproles should carry the workload.

Goff has chance to avoid 0-7 rookie year as Rams' starter (Yahoo Sports)

Jared Goff is down to his last chance to end his rookie season as a winning quarterback. With six straight losses as a starter to begin his career, Goff is staring down the possibility of a winless debut season when the Los Angeles Rams (4-11) wrap up their disappointing campaign at home against the Arizona Cardinals (6-8-1) on Sunday. While Goff's unimpressive statistics echo the entire Los Angeles offense's season-long woes, that 0-6 record as a starter means the most to Goff, who fully realizes the scope of the work he faces in the months and years ahead with the Rams' next coaching staff.

Titans say Marcus Mariota had surgery for broken leg (Yahoo Sports)

Mariota had surgery late Wednesday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina, to place a plate over his broken right fibula. The Titans confirmed Wednesday night that Mariota was out of surgery. The Titans placed him on injured reserve Tuesday, and Mariota will need four to five months of rehabilitation.

Fangio still plans to return as Bears defensive coordinator (Yahoo Sports)

As far as Vic Fangio is concerned, nothing has changed when it comes to his future as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator. ''Nothing's changed,'' Fangio said. The Bears (3-12) close out a dismal season at Minnesota on Sunday, then can start addressing a long list of issues in just about every area.

DeSean Jackson turned 30 and turned his game up to another level. For the first time in nine NFL seasons, Jackson recorded 100-plus receiving yards in three consecutive games and is hitting his stride just in time for the playoff-hopeful Washington Redskins. New York Giants cornerback Eli Apple called Jackson ''probably the best deep threat in the league,'' a declaration the numbers back up.

Beckham-Norman matchup not the focus for Redskins, Giants (Yahoo Sports)

There are more important things for the Washington Redskins and New York Giants to worry about than the usually entertaining matchup between cornerback Josh Norman and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. No doubt the Redskins' defender and the Giants' playmaker are going to mix it and get in each other's face during Sunday's regular-season finale in Landover, Maryland. The Redskins (8-6-1) need to win to get into the playoffs.

Indianapolis Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton knows the title chase is on. Hilton also understands the champion probably won't be known until Sunday night, after the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars finish their early afternoon game and his two nearest competitors - Beckham of the Giants and Atlanta's Julio Jones - complete their late-afternoon games. ''There's no need to watch it,'' Hilton said Wednesday.

Matt Ryan is back in the playoffs after a four-year wait. The Atlanta Falcons' four-time Pro Bowl quarterback never thought it would take that long after signing a six-year, $103.75 million contract in July 2013. Leading the league's top-scoring offense, Ryan is a strong contender for his first MVP award, but the nine-year veteran, a master at stating the obvious throughout his career, isn't about to look too far ahead.

(Reuters) - Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy and said on Wednesday he was entering a treatment facility. The NFL Network reported that two-time Pro Bowler Martin, who was held out of last week's loss against the New Orleans Saints, was suspended for using the stimulant Adderall. My initial instinct was to appeal the suspension and finish the season with my teammates," Martin, 27, said in a statement.

The National Football League has slapped Doug Martin with a four-game suspension after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back failed a drugs test. The ban begins with this week's final regular season game against the Carolina Panthers and Martin has now entered a treatment facility. Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter earlier benched the Pro Bowl running back in Saturday's 31-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances and said Wednesday he's entering a treatment facility rather than appeal the ban. The two-time Pro Bowl selection who was the league's second-leading rusher in 2015 will miss Sunday's regular-season finale against Carolina. The fifth-year pro said he decided to enter a treatment facility ''and receive the help I truly need'' after discussing the matter with people close to him, including Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

Steve Smith talks like a man ready to play his final game, though the Baltimore Ravens receiver has not completely closed the door on returning for a 17th NFL season. The 37-year-old Smith will play in his 219th regular-season game Sunday at Cincinnati. Smith broke into the league in 2001 with Carolina and played with the Panthers for 13 seasons before coming to Baltimore in 2014.

While Derek Carr underwent surgery to repair his broken right leg on Tuesday, the Oakland Raiders began preparing for a playoff run without their star quarterback. The Raiders have given no timetable for how long Carr will be sidelined, but his brother, David, said Monday on NFL Network, where he is an analyst, that the initial estimates are he will miss six to eight weeks. If Oakland loses and the Chiefs win, the Raiders will open the playoffs at AFC South champion Houston on wild-card weekend.

A 12-10 loss in Houston on Saturday night left them 5-9-1 , their worst record since a 4-12 finish in 2010.

Nova says decision to re-sign with Pirates an "easy" choice (Yahoo Sports)

Given a chance to explore the free agency market for the first time in his career, pitcher Ivan Nova methodically went through the process, listening to offers but never really changing his mindset. All things being equal - and just as importantly, all money being equal - Nova wanted to stick with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where the right-hander gave his uneven career a jump start with two occasionally brilliant months after being acquired at the trade deadline from the New York Yankees. ''My focus was trying to get it done with the Pirates,'' Nova said Tuesday after signing a three-year deal with Pittsburgh that will pay him just shy of $9 million a season.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger might get his wish to spend the meaningless regular season finale in sweats, watching backup Landry Jones go to work against the Cleveland Browns. With the AFC North title in hand and the third seed in the AFC already secured, running back Le'Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown could get the day off too. Coach Mike Tomlin, however, has a message for the rest of his team: you better be ready to work.

Despite being No. 1 in the preseason Associated Press Pro 32 rankings, Carolina never came close to making it back to the Super Bowl. In fact, the Panthers didn't even make it back to the playoffs, ending a three-year run as NFC South champions. You really do,'' Rivera said.

Rookie stars want wins, even with Cowboys secure atop NFC (Yahoo Sports)

Dak Prescott can help the Dallas Cowboys set a franchise record with 14 wins. Ezekiel Elliott could break Eric Dickerson's 33-year-old rookie rushing record with a career high and a few more yards. Other than that, Dallas doesn't have much on the line in the regular-season finale at Philadelphia on Sunday.
