Life is good - or at least, better - for the Green Bay Packers, even with a 5-6 record and their star quarterback nursing what he apparently considers a minor left hamstring injury. Too many cheesesteaks on the plane,'' Packers coach Mike McCarthy joked Tuesday evening before turning serious. Now, while they acknowledge they have a lot of work to do to extend their seven-year run of consecutive playoff appearances - the Packers are two games back of NFC North-leading Detroit (7-4) - they enter Sunday's game against the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field with renewed hope.

Fisher reiterated Tuesday that Dickerson is welcome to be around the Rams (4-7). Fisher says he explained to Dickerson earlier this month that players were uncomfortable with him being on the sideline after he disparaged them on his weekly radio show.

Cowboys-Vikings a matchup of strengths (Yahoo Sports)

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is being hailed by many as the best running back to enter the league since Adrian Peterson. In a league where running backs have been devalued, Elliott has made Dallas' decision to draft the Ohio State back fourth overall this year a wise move. Elliott leads the NFL with 1,199 yards and is second in rushing touchdowns with 11.

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vance McDonald remembers quarterback Colin Kaepernick leading the team to the NFC championship game in 2013 with his ability to make plays all over the field. McDonald feels as if Kaepernick is starting to regain that form and the confidence that comes with playing every week after being selected as the starter in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills. ''(He is) just having a lot more patience in the pocket and having a lot more cleaner reads,'' McDonald said.

Terence Newman was on the inactive list at Detroit last week for the first time in two seasons with Minnesota. Newman had a neck injury that didn't have enough time to heal with only three days between games. With Dallas due in on Thursday, seeing Newman on the sideline again would sure be a surprise.

Cornerback Brandon Carr bristled at the suggestion that the Dallas defense had lost its mojo through four straight games without forcing a turnover, or 53 pass attempts by Washington's Kirk Cousins without a sack. ''Are you trying to take it from us?'' Carr shot back. The nine-season veteran has a pretty strong argument behind him, as does second-year safety Byron Jones when he summarily dismisses any negative numbers.

The learning curve is starting to level off for Javon Hargrave, Artie Burns and Sean Davis. Exactly what the Steelers (6-5) had in mind when they used each of their first three picks in the 2016 draft to give an underperforming unit a needed jolt of youth and talent, even if they didn't anticipate relying on them to become regulars quite so soon. There was Hargrave, a third-rounder from South Carolina State, falling on a fumble in the end zone for a score in the same game.

Negotiators for baseball players and owners are meeting this week in Irving, Texas, in an attempt to reach agreement on a collective bargaining agreement to replace the five-year contract that expires Thursday. Compensation for the loss of free agents has been an issue since the free-agent era began in 1976. The statistical ranking system established in the 1981 strike settlement was scrapped in the current agreement that began with the 2012-13 offseason and replaced by qualifying offers: A team would be entitled to draft-pick compensation if a player left as a free agent after failing to accept a one-year contract for the average salary among the 125 highest-paid players ($17.2 million this year) and the signing club would lose a top pick.
